Update: More details on the Roosevelt Field Mall Area Shooting

Several hours have past since the shooting and the suspect, who police have identified as Sang Ho Kim, is yet to be found and the manhunt is still on. The Roosevelt Field Mall and other nearby highways and schools have been given clearance to open since 3pm.

I visited the mall at approximately 5pm where many different media channels were gathered and reporting in front of Akbar restaurant. Many people could be seen waiting at the bus stop and parking lots were pretty empty. Inside the mall, there were a few people shopping. The lighting in the mall was dimmed and the atmosphere was quieter than usual.

Some stores such as Macys, Au Bon Pain, H&M and Essentials opened up while others like Victoria's Secret and Lush remained closed for the rest of the day.

To recap the events that happened this morning, this is what had happened. At around 10AM, Kim went into Savenergy located on 645 South Street in East Garden City and opened fire and shot 2 people, according to News 12 Long Island's website. Kim reportedly shot the CEO and owner of the savenergy business and another employee and then fled in a white Honda Pilot. The employee died earlier today and the CEO is in critical condition receiving surgery at Nassau University Medical Center.

Kim was a former employee at the business and was upset over some business deals which may had led him to this incident according to police reports. Steven Skrynecki, the Nassau County Chief of Department said that the Kim is not a threat to the community but he is dangerous.

Representatives from the mall have been updating people on the reports throughout the day through their Facebook page.

Superfoods a la Cart Opens in Roosevelt Field

There is a new addition to the food court and it's called Superfoods a la Cart. The canteen stand offers an assortment of organic and gluten free products such as cereal, chocolate, chips, cookies, fruit snacks and nuts.

Dana Herrera, the manager of the stand, said, "this is actually the first place in the mall that offers foods that are gluten free." Therefore, there are no other competitors. She also promises fast service and good choices.

If your thinking about what to get from this new stand, Herrera commends the superfood whole base cereal. This cereal is widely recognized for being the only cereal made both organic and gluten free. The prices of the products range from $1.99 to $9.99.

Superfoods a la Cart is open to shoppers and employees. It is located in the food court across from Ranch 1

September 12, 2013: Model for a Day Competition

Earlier tonight, Simon malls presented the annual “Model for a Day” event in which 28 aspiring models walked down the runway in hopes of being selected to take part in Simon Fashion Now’s runway show on October 11, 2013.

The event was planned by Maria DiLeo, the marketing director of Roosevelt Field Mall and Kristen Innvar, the assistant director of mall marketing at Simon Property Group and sponsored by Winthrop-University Hospital Breast Health Center. Leeana of Long Island's K98.3 morning show was the host for the evening.

In the North Court, the contestants were judged in three categories: personality, appearance and runway walk. The show included 6 men and 22 women who were judged by Maria DiLeo and Andrea. When asked what key feature she was looking for in the contestants DiLeo said, “I am all about personality. I wanna see someone that can rock that stage and is not afraid to show their personality and how confident they are, that’s what I want to see.” On the other hand, Andrea, the second judge and manager at Intimacy said “I think I want to see a great walk... I want to see some sachay, some shante...”

Based on tonight’s performance, two winners, one male and one female, will be given a makeover and will have the opportunity to work alongside professional models. The winners will be announced tomorrow, September 13, through the Roosevelt Field Mall Facebook page. The link to their page is below.
